Cuban Music

Native Americans supplied the maracas. African slaves brought drums and ritual music, and Spaniards brought guitars, brass instruments, and clarinets along with European ballroom dancing. The advent of blues and jazz gave new forms to styles of songs, notably feeling songs, which joined the more traditional styles of trova and bolero. Cuban culture represents a convergence of these diverse backgrounds, and the musical heritage presented in this book reflects these traditions as well. In colonial times, African ritual sounds mixed with Catholic liturgies and brass bands of the Spanish military academies. Ballroom dances, including French music from Haiti popular in 18th-century Havana society, existed side by side with the cabildos (guilds and carnival clubs) and the plantations. The son, considered the expression of Cuban musical identity, had its origins in a rural setting in which African slaves and small farmers from Andalusia worked and played music together, developing many variations over the years, including big band music. Cuban music is now experiencing a major renaissance, and is enjoyed throughout the world.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Ruhe, meine Seele!, Op. 27 No. 1, is the first in a set of four songs composed by Richard Strauss in 1894. It was originally for voice and piano, and not orchestrated by Strauss until 1948, after he had completed one of his Four Last Songs "Im Abendrot". The words are from a poem "Ruhe, meine Seele" written by the poet Karl Henckell. Strauss composed the song in May 1894, and that September he gave it as a wedding present to his wife the soprano Pauline de Ahna. The instrumentation is: piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, cor anglais, 2 clarinets in B , bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns in F, 2 trumpets in C, 3 trombones, tuba, 3 timpani, celesta, harp and the orchestral string section. The accompaniment has sombre and ambiguous harmonies, with contrasting peaceful and tempestuous episodes.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Overture Respighiana (Overtura Respighiana) was composed by Salvatore Di Vittorio in 2008, as an homage to Ottorino Respighi. The work was written one year before Di Vittorio's completion of Respighi's rediscovered first Violin Concerto in A Major. The overture is scored for two flutes (II Piccolo), two oboes (II English horn), two clarinets in A, two bassoons, two horns in F, two trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, 3 percussion (triangle, antique cymbals, glockenspiel, snare drum, tambourine, cymbals, bass drum, and tam tam), celesta, harp, and strings. The overture was composed as an homage not only to Ottorino Respighi, but Respighi's homage works on Gioacchino Rossini (La Boutique Fantasque and Rossiniana).

Reed (instrument)

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online.Single reeds are used on the mouthpieces of clarinets and saxophones. They have a flat (back) side which fits against the mouthpiece and a top side which tapers to a thin tip. They are rectangular in shape except for the thin vibrating tip, which is curved to match the curve of the mouthpiece tip. Although all single reeds are shaped similarly, they vary in size to fit the appropriate mouthpiece. The most obvious variation in reeds designed for the same instrument is a variation in thickness ("hardness" or "strength"), generally measured on a scale of 1 through 5 from softest to hardest. This is not a standardized scale and reed strengths vary between manufacturers. The thickness of the tip and heel and the profile in between also affect the sound and playability. Cane of different grades (density, stiffness), even if cut with the same profile, will also respond differently.

Chamber Music of Eric Mandat

Eric Mandat has established himself as one of the most highly regarded composers of new music for clarinet. So far, his most well-known works are for unaccompanied clarinet, although in recent years he has begun composing more for small ensembles that include one or more clarinets. In this book I discuss three of Mandat's chamber music compositions - 3 for 2 (for clarinet and percussion), So What Elsa's New? (for two clarinets), and One Liners (for three clarinets). These works, while employing extended techniques such as quarter tones and multiphonics, also use recognizable forms and clear rhythmic and melodic motives to make them accessible to the listener and the performer. A formal analysis of each work illuminates these three works, of which many clarinetists are unfamiliar, so that both performers and composers may gain further insight into new music for clarinet, and new chamber music in particular.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Qernête is a double reed musical instrument of ancient origin (it is often asserted that the design is several thousand years old) used in Kurdistan in addition to other parts of the Middle East, Armenian Plateau and Central Asia. In Kurdistan it is mostly used in mountainous areas in the north. The Kurdish qernête resembles the Armenian duduk, Azerbaijani balaban and Turkish mey, but has a rougher sound. The qernête is known among the Kurds for its melancholic and nostalgic sound. A reed is a thin strip of material which vibrates to produce a sound on a musical instrument. The reeds of most woodwind instruments are made from Arundo donax ("Giant cane") or synthetic material, tuned reeds (as in harmonicas and accordions) are made of metal or synthetics.Single reeds are used on the mouthpieces of clarinets and saxophones. They have a flat (back) side which fits against the mouthpiece and a top side which tapers to a thin tip. Every year again in the Advent and Christmas season, pupils ask for Christmas carols which are easy to play, yet sound beautiful. In response to this demand, Rudolf Mauz now presents an edition for four clarinets following the anthology Drei Klarinetten zur Weihnacht (Schott ED 9998). The quartets are set in easy keys and times so that they can be well mastered by beginners as well. Parts 3 and 4 do not contain any overblowing, part 4 may alternatively be played by bass clarinet.Apart from the most popular Christmas carols from the German-speaking areas, the book also contains internationally well-known titles such as Jingle Bells, The first Noel, Deck the Halls, Joy to the World, We wish you a Merry Christmas and Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.Instrumentation:4 clarinets
