Change and the New International Economic Order

In the academic year 1977-1978 Tilburg University celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. The commemoration involved specific scientific activities. The theme of 'Innovation', broadly de fined as 'developments in sciences and society', offered the scientific framework in which these activities took olace. The present volume is one of the results. It consists of the texts of a series of lectures held at the Department of Eco nomics of Tilburg University. The Department's Colloquium Committee, set up to organize discussions on current research, arranged the lectures. On this occasion, the committee decided to draw attention to the multidisciplinary character of re search in the area of NIEO, the New International Economic Or der. The collection of papers that eventually resulted is published in this volume. - Gratitude is owed to the people, thanks to whom this volume could be published: to Mr. Ad Janssen, head of the Office of the Department of Economics for offering the secretarial fa cilities needed to 'process' the book, despite an understaffed office already facing excessive work; to the 'Fifty Years Til burg University' Committee for creating the financial ways and means; to Mr. Jan Vingerhoets of the Development Research In stitute of Tilburg University for his most valuable advice and help; to Mr. McGivern who gave the book its final form in Eng lish. Thanks also are due to Mr. Hans Sinner, responsible for Tilburg University Press; to Mr. van Vloten, publisher, Marti nus Nijhoff, and to Mrs. Hinkenkemper, Miss Annelies Vugs and Dr. George Embree.

Control of Structures

ggf. zzgl. Versand

This book is an outgrowth of several years of teaching and research of the two authors in the field of structural dynamics and control. The content of the book is based on structural dynamics, classical and modern control theory and involves also recent developments that took place with respect to the control of systems with distri buted masses. It is hoped that the book will serve the researcher and the practicing engineer in the areas of ci vi 1, mechanical and aeronautical engineering. It may also be of interest to applied mathematicians and to physicists. There is no question that the book can be used as a reference book for advanced courses in the above mentioned areas. The numerous examples will provide students with the necessary material for exercising themselves and for self studying. Thanks are due to Mrs. Cynthia Jones for preparing patiently and competently the typescript of the book. The services of Mrs. Linda Strouth, Solid Mechanics Division, University of Waterloo, rendered in producing the camera-ready copy of the book with great skill and devotion, are gratefully acknowledged. Special thanks go to Mr. Ir. Ad. C. Plaizier, at Martinus Nijhoff/Dr. W. Junk, who with much understanding and enthusiasm supervised the production of the book as Publisher. May the readers of it enjoy it, and may they have the fee ling of having gained something in turning to it and using it.

Descended and Cryptorchid Testis
168,00 CHF *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

During the past decade extensive investigations have been done on the testis. Since the observations have been published in many different journals. it seemed appropriate to bring together and summarize some of the pertinent findings in a single volume. Twenty-eight scientists and clinicians from nine countries have contributed to this book. They have reviewed the literature and presented their own, new observations on the developmentaL anatomicaL physiologicaL biochemical and pathological aspects of the descended and cryptorchid testis. In addition, several contributors have evaluated the usefulness of certain animals as models for systematically studying specific aspects of cryptorchidism. It is hoped that this volume will serve as a useful summary and reference for those working in this area and that it will encourage further research in testicular physiopathology. The editor thanks the contributors for their enthusiasm, cooperation and meticulous writing of the chapters. The support of the Departments of GynecologyjObstetrics and the Department of Physiology of Wayne State University School of Medicine. Detroit and the assistance from the staff of Martinus Nijhoff are gratefully acknowledged. The cheerful cooperation of Miss Lori Rust and Miss Penny Stoops who helped to type and assemble the volume is most deeply appreciated.

Practice and Realization

The present book is an exp]oration of some basic issues of Kant's moral phi losophy. The point of departure is the concept offreedom and the self-legisla tion of reason. Since self-Iegislation is expressed in the sphere of practice or morality, it is meant to overcome some of the vulnerable aspects of Kant's theoretical philosophy, namely that which Kant himself pointed to and called the 'lucky chance,' in so far as the application of reason to sensuous data is concerned. The book attempts to show that Kant's practical or moral philosophy faces questions which are parallel to those he faced in the sphere ofhis theore tical philosophy. The problematic situation of realization of practice is parallel to the problematic situation of application of theory. It is in the line of the problems emerging from Kant's practical philosophy that the present book deals with some of Kant's minor writings, or less-known ones, in cluding his writings in the sphere of politics, history and education. The limitations of self-Iegislation - this is the theme of the book. The book is parallel to the author's previous one on Kant: 'Experience and its Systema tization - Studies in Kant' (Nijhoff, 1965, 2nd edition 1973), as well as to: 'From Substance to Subject -Studies in Hegel' (Nijhoff, 1974). Jerusalem 1978 ABBREVIATIONS As to the references to Kant's major works, the following procedme will be ob served: Kritik der reinen Vernunft will be quoted as Kr. d. r. V.

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute Compilation of H...

In 1997, 'The Raoul Wallenberg Institute Compilation of Human Rights Instruments' was published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers as the first volume in the series The Raoul Wallenberg Institute Human Rights Library . In 2004, the second edition of that Compilation was published, and the present publication is the third, revised edition of the book. Since the second edition of the Compilation went out of print, major human rights treaties have entered, or are about to enter, into force, and a number of non-treaty instruments have been adopted. The dynamic development in international human rights law and the increasing number of instruments have brought about a revision in the selection of instruments to be included in this new edition of the Compilation. Like in the previous editions, the selection of instruments is based on the experience acquired by staff of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute; most of the reproduced texts are the subject of frequent references in courses, seminars and workshops organized by the Institute. The chosen treaties and non-treaty instruments are either universal or regional; some of them are of a general nature while others have specific or specialized contents. They cover, among others, civil, political, economic, social, cultural and solidarity rights

Random vibrations of elastic systems
239,00 CHF *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

The subject of random vibrations of elastic systems has gained, over the past decades, great importance, specifically due to its relevance to technical problems in hydro- and aero-mechanics. Such problems involve aircraft, rockets and oil-drilling platforms; elastic vibrations of structures caused by acoustic radiation of a jet stream and by seismic disturbances must also be included. Appli cations of the theory of random vibrations are indeed numerous and the development of this theory poses a challenge to mathematicians, mechanicists and engineers. Therefore, a book on random vibrations by a leading authority such as Dr. V.V. Bolotin must be very welcome to anybody working in this field. It is not surprising that efforts were soon made to have the book translated into English. With pleasure I acknowledge the co-operation of the very competent translater, I Shenkman; of Mrs. C. Jones, who typeJ the first draft; and of Th. Brunsting, P. Keskikiikonen and R. Piche, who read it and suggested where required, corrections and changes. I express my gratitude to Martinus Nijhoff Publishers BV for entrust ing me with the task of editing the English translation, and to F.J. van Drunen, publishers of N. Nijhoff Publishers BV, who so kindly supported my endeavours. Special acknowledgement is due to Mrs. L. Strouth, Solid Mechanics Division, University of Waterloo, for her competent and efficient preparation of the final manuscript.
